Workshops
There are three different sets of workshops available.
- First set is for all the children growing up in a global village and responding to its challenges in different spheres of their lives.
- The second set is for African American children and their mentors (parents and teachers).
- The third set is for children from the immigrant families and their mentors (parents and teachers).
1. Workshops for Global Citizenship "Thriving in a Global Village"
This set of workshops addresses a new concept of global citizenship through an approach of building bridges and tearing down the walls between societies based on economic, cultural and religious differences.
The three sub-sets or workshops available are:
- 1.1 Converging Destinies
- 1.2. Colonization to Globalization
- 1.3. Gearing Up for a Global Labor Pool
2. Workshops for Black American Families - "Empowering the Insiders"
This set of workshops addresses the mainstreaming challenges of a resilient minority that continues to be a part of marginalized populations of our society. They are insiders to U.S society and yet struggle to be a part of the mainstream in the true sense of the term.
The three sub-sets or workshops available are:
2.1 Parent Workshop: Self-Empowerment
Main Focus
- Raising an Empowered Generation with New Aspirations
- Preaching and Practicing Deferred Gratification
- Raising an Emotionally and Psychologically Secure Generation
- Resilience and Self Confidence
2.2 Teacher Workshop: Empowering the Insiders
Main Focus
- Motivation to Empowerment
- Positive Expectations
- Instilling High Self Esteem and Positive Self Image
- Mentoring a New Self Confident Generation
2.3 Student Workshop: Self-Empowerment
Main Focus
- Having a Positive Self-Image
- Taking Control of Your Own Destiny
- Moderation and Self Control
- Understanding your Rights and Responsibilities
3. Workshops for Immigrant Families-"Making Best of Both Worlds"
This set of workshops, called the ‘Parallel Socialization Workshops‘ is designed to meet the mentoring needs of immigrants parents (who are raising their children in a society they did not grow up in) and teachers (who don’t have a first- hand immigrant experience) and the children whose worlds are completely different from the mentors at home and at schools.
The three sub-sets of Parallel Socialization Workshops with their main foci are:
3.1 Parent Workshops: Positive Parenting in Two Cultures
Main Focus
- Parenting Workshop 1: Culture Talk- Broadening Frames of Reference
- Parenting Workshop 2: The Public School System in America
- Parenting Workshop 3: Accepting Parallel Socialization
3.2 Teacher Workshops: Culture Sensitivity and Diversity Training
Main Focus
- Teacher Workshop 1: Culture Talk- Approaching Diversity
- Teacher Workshop 2: Serving Bi-lingual and Bi-cultural Students
- Teacher Workshop 3: Recognizing Parallel Socialization
3.3 Teen Workshops Teen challenges and conflicts in a Diverse society
Main Focus
- Teen Workshop 1: Culture Talk-Balancing the Multiple Frames of Reference
- Teen Workshop 2: Challenges at School and Peer Pressure
- Teen Workshop 3: Balancing Parallel Socialization
Other Workshops Available
Workshops on selected topics are available for varied target groups. These are available in sets of sessions on related topics. The agencies can request the whole set or can go for selected sessions, depending on what they need. Additional workshops can be designed upon request after a needs assessment.
